    Sadly, woodworker.com has closed their doors. Lockwood is available. During a conversation with Lockwood, they declined to recommend for a color match or to get in the ballpark. This is not a complaint. At all. It is understandable that they want to keep clear of recommending in an area as subjective as individual interpretations of color. So, I bought a packet each of their Mahogany family. Will begin experimenting when the dye arrives. Interestingly, they emphasized that Watco Danish Oil contains not only oil, but solvents - and that their product is designed for purely oil-based solutions. I saw your results, and I feel safe enough giving this more than a passing effort. Thanks for posting this. Perhaps with your idea, I can get past the shock of having one finishing routine turn out so differently on QSWO and QSRO. QSWO = spectacular. QSRO = same color but complete hiding of rays and flecks. Muddy looking to boot. Conditioner on QSRO prior to dye somewhat gets the rays and flecks back, but the color is too light, too orange, and the result is still muddy. Going for Onondaga on QSRO with TransTint Brown Mahogany and water, 1/1.

    Are there any adjustments for squaring the table to the back of the blade (for joinery), or is that a matter of shimming the table? Any adjustment for aligning the whole blade guide column to the blade? (minor annoyances from my current Delta cast iron saw)

    • @TheThoughtfulWoodworker
      @TheThoughtfulWoodworker День тому

      Well the blade is in a fixed position and the table tilts to set 90 degrees. There's a dead nut to return to 90 each time you tilt it. No adjustment to skew the blade left or right, that would be a fence adjustment. I use mine all the time for notching and it works great for that. Best.

    I concur. Just bought one of these to replace my Jet JJP-12HH planer/jointer. I needed more capacity and I've had nothing but problems with the planer function of the Jet JJP-12HH. No matter how I adjusted the rollers or replaced the rubber roller, boards would often stop planing and I got tired of needing to help pull the boards through the planer, even with a slick table. I'm keeping it though for the 12" jointer function, which works well. The fit and finish was excellent on my 208HH. It wasn't that difficult to mount the extension wings and I used a rubber hammer after tightening the bolts slightly to get them flush with the table. The set screws level the extension wings. It took me about an hour to get it right. After adjusting the table rollers, snipe is very slight to where sanding out isn't an issue. I checked the gearbox and belts and all seems aligned. I also used the same Fox Shop mobile base and Wixey digital scale as The Thoughtful Woodworker did on other videos. Good to see I can order a different gear sprocket and chain if I ever have the need to slow the feed rate for highly figured grain to reduce/eliminate potential tearout. Older videos of this model complained about the thick protective grease on the table, wings and cutter head but now a light oil is used that wipes off with paper towels. I did that, wiped again with alcohol and used a Boeshield T-9 on the table. The delivery guy had an electric pallet jack, so he moved it to where I needed it. I was worried curbside delivery meant I needed to load it onto a trailer to get it into my shop like other big machines I've purchased. I bought from Home Depot on sale ($800 off). I think all resellers for this equipment just ship directly from Jet, so your delivery options may vary by the seller's carrier. Not many videos on this 20" planer but The Thoughtful Woodworker's videos are professional, thorough and made setting up my planer up faster than combing through the manual to interpret what is explained. I looked at the Powermatic 209HH version and couldn't see why I should spend $2k more for 6 more cutters on the helical head when otherwise they look the same sans the ugly yellow Powermatic paint. Thanks again Willie!

    If you guys end up with this product just know that you need to remove the metal tube the inserts go in first, it’s shipped where you can’t get bits in the tip unless you do that. You should be able to see the splits in the silver metal tube. I just fought with this myself thinking the bits that came with it didn’t fit it at all. Edit: of course put the metal tube bit holder back in after you pull it completely out the first time, I wasn’t clear about that😂.

    Exactly what I was looking for. My JPW-208HH is arriving next week and I bought it due to claims by others of no snipe. There is another UA-cam video of unboxing, setup and the first board planed and the snipe was awful on his JWP-208HH. My combo Jet jointer/planer JPP12-HH had bad snipe and adjusting the feed roller and rubber roller pressure was a dance between either adjusting so the boards wouldn't stop feeding through or no snipe. Rollers on the table seem like a great design as other 20" planers have the same setup. The rollers on the table reduce board friction. Thank you!

    I want to replace the rubber webbing on several pieces of mid-century modern furniture, but the dish couch. I have utilizes loops at the end of the webbing, which is the intentioned by a wooden rod. What sort of clips or rivets would you use to make loops at the endof webbing. The chair we have would utilize the metal clips that slide in Otts that are pre-cut in the wood frame of the furniture so that seems like a pretty simple straightforward fix any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @TheThoughtfulWoodworker

      The only system that really sprays unthinned latex is an airless sprayer, but it can't match the fine finish of a turbine HVLP sprayer. I thin my urethane cabinet paint about 10 percent with water. I've used Titan turbines, but I prefer Fuji. Good luck with your decision!

    Like someone else said I too have the Incra fence so could do without the 1/4” mdf backer against the fence and just set it, zero the scale and then move it forward 1/4”. However I like your approach with a modification: to know your proper fence position, push the fence away, attach one piece of mdf to the fence that spans the entire fence, then progressively move the fence towards the cutter so that it cuts a cutter shaped profile that projects only as far as required. This way you get fence support all the way across (no gap in the fence) and it’s also safer.

      I like your idea for a zero clearance fence. Here's why I never bothered doing that. With my system, you remove the spacer for the second cut, so it wouldn't be there for the final pass. Generally in woodworking though I usually like 2 passes better than one, and a zero clearance insert whenever I can. Thanks.

      @@TheThoughtfulWoodworker sure, with using the accuracy of the Incra fence I can do the two passes with a sacrificial fence

    What if you change needle size and the distance changes between the scarf and the hook? 3:11

      As long as you're using the right needle system, changing between a size 18 and 22 won't make enough of a difference to matter. Thanks

    Hi I have a Singer 111w155 but i really like the idea of zigzag for bar tacking and heavy button holing on heavy denim and duck canvas. Do you think the sailrite would go through seams of about 6 layers thick?

    • @TheThoughtfulWoodworker
      @TheThoughtfulWoodworker 17 днів тому

      I've had two Sailrite machines, this blue one and a Leatherwork. Both had limited presser foot height. Zigzag is nice, but clearance under the foot is more important to me. I have zigzag machines and straight stitch machines, and I actually use the straight stitch for buttonholes (with an old school Buttonholer). Good luck!

    I've had my sailrite for a couple of years, and use it all the time. When building or repairing sails, a zig zag stitch is needed/preferred, to handle the stresses on the fabric. An industrial zig zag would cost about $4500 or more (Consew 146RB) so the sailrite is a bargain. That said, I am in process of ordering a Juki 1541 or 1508 for my canvas and leather work but am keeping the sailrite.

    Hello! I appreciate your videos as I’m trying to learn how to paint cabinets and trim work. You mentioned you like the air pot because it allows you to hold the gun and spray at any angle. Would using the 3m pot system accomplish the same thing? Or with the heavier paint products, does the pressure pot make a big difference getting the paint to push through the gun?Thank you!

    • @TheThoughtfulWoodworker
      @TheThoughtfulWoodworker 19 днів тому

      The 3m PPS system also allows you to spray upside down, as long as you get the hard plastic cup with pressure tube. Not quite as maneuverable as the Fuji pressure pot, but still a good way to go

    your videos are absolute gold - so very helpful. subscribed! A few questions if you you don't mind: Can I use shellac/sanding sealer and the NGR mixture you mentioned if I'm finishing a product for outdoors assuming I then top coat it with something like total boat varnish (gleem to be exact)? I know laquer and shellac are a no no for outdoors, but does it matter if sealed/protected? Also, why do you mix laquer thinner in the mix instead of just alcohol? does cure more slowly? and if so, then why not use just laquer thinner? thank you so much!!!

      Thanks! I generally don't use finished wood outdoors. It just fails too quickly. When people ask me what's the best wood for Adirondack chairs I often say "aluminum". Sorry I couldn't be more help.
